The Bible is God’s WORD! And God’s WORD is TRUE!
What an incredible proclamation from our Fearless Leader, Julie Richard. What is even more incredible about this bold statement of faith is that every child who walks into the doors of our church learns it, along with fun motions to help them memorize this amazing truth!
I can’t tell you how many times my 4 year old daughter says, “Hey Mom, God’s WORD is TRUE!” What a blessing it is to partner with the local church to teach our children the truth about God’s WORD. The key word there is to partner. The teaching isn’t just done on Sundays but it is something we as parents are called to do daily… to teach them the truth of God’s WORD in our homes.
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons (and daughters) and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up… Deuteronomy 6:5-7
As a family, we can commit to study God’s word and to be intentional to hide God’s word in our hearts; after all, scripture tells us that is active, alive, and sharper than any two edge sword!
We as parents are the best examples for our children and when they see us learning God’s WORD it will encourage them to learn as well! It’s never too late to start!
Here are a few of my favorite ways to teach scripture!
Alphabet Scripture Cards!
These have been an awesome way to incorporate scripture memory, reading and writing skills into our daily routine. Each week we work on one letter from the alphabet and one scripture. Throughout the week my daughter practices writing the letter of the week and then recites the scripture back to me. When she can recite it by herself she gets to put a sticker on her memory verse chart! I write down all of the references on the back of the chart so that we can keep track of all that she has learned.
Another fun tip is to add motions to the verses. This is a great way to help children memorize and have fun while doing it! I love seeing my daughter throw up her guns when she talks about God giving her a spirit of POWER!
Memory Verse Notecards!
This is how my brother and I learned scripture when we were young. We would write down a new verse each week on a notecard and put it somewhere around the house where we would see it repeatedly and then at the end of the week we would add it to our memory verse file box. Throughout our youth we had those boxes to read through for affirmation and encouragement and now when we see our boxes we are reminded of what God has done in our lives!
Another form of memorization that I LOVE and still use for myself today is a prayer journal. Have your older children spend time in daily quiet reflection. Teach them to be still and to communicate with their Father, God. Have them begin by reading their weekly scripture, then have them write it in their journal and then have them spend time in prayer. They can list out their prayer requests one by one or they can write their prayers out word for word. This is also something you can do along with them. It truly is life changing to be able to record our prayers and then look back and see how God has worked in our lives.
Finally, one of the best ways to memorize something is through music. It is amazing how many songs quote scripture and they can be an incredible tool for us to use. Here are some great resources for music taken directly from scripture for adults and children!
God’s word is active and it penetrates the soul. It is how we can interact and learn from the living God. It is His love story to us and our manual for living. It is the greatest gift that we can give our children… to experience the word of God for themselves. It is a gift that no one can take away from them and it will affect every aspect of their lives. I encourage you to dive in, dig in and hide God’s word in your heart!
Remember, God’s WORD is TRUE! So let’s get started TODAY!
